📖 About Chinese Zodiac & Benming Year

The 12 Chinese Zodiac Animals

The Chinese zodiac (生肖, shēngxiào) is a repeating cycle of 12 years, with each year represented by an animal. The animals in order are: Rat (鼠), Ox (牛), Tiger (虎), Rabbit (兔), Dragon (龙), Snake (蛇), Horse (马), Goat (羊), Monkey (猴), Rooster (鸡), Dog (狗), and Pig (猪). Each animal is associated with specific personality traits and fortunes. Unlike Western astrology which is based on months, Chinese zodiac is determined by the lunar birth year.

The Five Elements (Wu Xing)

Each zodiac year is also associated with one of the Five Elements (五行, wǔxíng): Metal (金), Wood (木), Water (水), Fire (火), and Earth (土). The element cycle rotates every 10 years (each element appears twice per cycle, in yin and yang forms). Your element influences your personality, career suitability, and compatibility with others. For example, a Metal Rat (born 1960) differs from a Water Rat (born 1972).

What is Benming Year (本命年)?

Benming Year (本命年, literally "origin life year") occurs every 12 years when the current year's zodiac animal matches your birth year's animal. For example, if you were born in the Year of the Dragon, every Dragon year is your Benming Year. Traditional Chinese belief holds that Benming Years are challenging — you are said to "offend the God of Age" (值太岁). To ward off bad luck, it's customary to wear red underwear, red socks, and red bracelets throughout the year. Red is considered the most auspicious color in Chinese culture, believed to scare away evil spirits.

💡 What's my zodiac if I was born in January? Chinese zodiac follows the lunar calendar, not the solar calendar. If you were born in January or early February, your sign may differ from the Western zodiac year. Check a lunar calendar for the exact new year date.
